Latin America News Review

This blog is intended for those who want to read press articles that contain unique insights --as well as information that is often hard to find-- about Latin American politics, economy and society. I compile news articles on a regular basis and occasionally include my own analysis. Comments are always welcome. I hope people find this site useful.

Breaking News! Venezuela Opposition Leader Murdered, National Police Suspected

Inka Kola News

August 1, 2008

Big news breaking in the region. The body of Guillermo Rivera was found buried in a garbage dump, apparently having been strangled. Rivera, a leader of an important opposition group in Venezuela, went missing on April 15th. His family were told at the time he had been taken into custody by the National Police Force.

This promises to set off an international scandal of the highest order. With the political situation tense as it is, this form of suppression of opposition political leaders is an affront to the spirit of democracy, protests should be made to the government of Hugo Chávez immediately and without doubt Venezuela and its government should be IMMEDIATELY SANCTIONED BY ALL INTERNATIONAL BODIES.

Here's the link to the full story. Oh....wait a minute....it's in Colombia, not Venezuela. Oops, silly me! And it was news there two weeks ago. Amazing how that one wasn't reported in English, isn't it?

I read your article and the link to the source, but I don't see the relation between this unionist from Colombia and President Chavez of Venezuela. Maybe you need to go into more detail as to how they are related and why would Chavez like to see him dead. Otherwise it just seems you find articles to write againts Chavez like most media does.

No anon, it's satire. The killing had nothing to do with Venezuela and everything to do with the crazy Colombian government. That's the point.

Yeah, anon, it's a joke. And the joke is on the mainstream U.S. press. If an opposition leader were killed by the police in Venezuela, the press would be all over the story. When it happens in Colombia, however, they don't touch the story with a ten-foot-pole. Pretty disgraceful.

In the lamestream media, Alvaro Uribe = saint, Hugo Chavez = Satan. This although trade unionists and other oppositionists are murdered by right-wing government-connected thugs all the time in Colombia, and none of the time in Venezuela.

Just a little backgrounder for the anonymous and confused.
