A freelance journalist, Phil Gunson has been based in Caracas since 1999. By Justin Delacour
Latin America News Review
May 21, 2010
In analyzing old NPR coverage of Latin America for my dissertation, I just came across a curious interview from the day after the coup against Venezuela's Chavez government in 2002. The interview is with the prominent freelance correspondent Phil Gunson, who has reported on Latin America for the Miami Herald, The Economist, Newsweek, The Guardian and The Independent.
Gunson first explains that, in shutting down Venezuela's Congress and Supreme Court, the coup leaders were effectively "dispensing with the need to deal with any remaining opposition on the part of Chavez's supporters, and they can pretty much do what they like because, of course, they have the armed forces with them."
Then, immediately after explaining that the coup leaders had just dissolved the Congress and Supreme Court, Gunson had these glowing words to say about coup leader Pedro Carmona:
"He has a reputation as a conciliator, as a man of consensus--if you like, the polar opposite to his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, who had a distinct talent for dividing rather than uniting."
(In another interview with NPR that day, Gunson said that Carmona was known "as a man with strong democratic credentials").
Never does it seem to occur to Gunson that to speak of Carmona "as a conciliator, as a man of consensus" immediately after explaining that he had just dissolved the Congress and the Supreme Court is grossly contradictory.
One wonders if Mr. Gunson will ever be called upon to explain the words that he used to describe Carmona at the failed coup leader's moment of infamy.

Now Justin. You know that is a silly question, just as you know the answer. No, of course not. The US and Great Britain news media are so anti-Chavez and anti-socialism that they can't bring themselves to print a single good thing about Venezuela or Hugo Chavez. How many times have you read or heard him referred to as 'dictator'? The same with Evo Morales. I have yet to read any reporting in the US or British Media that has a single thing critical to say about the opposition oligarchs, even though they are the ones who usually are inciting the violence and with a very small minority.
Right, but it's one thing to dislike Chavez. It's quite another thing to voice blatant apologetics for an anti-Chavez coup leader who had just jettisoned the country's political institutions by decree.
How could Gunson rationalize his kind words for Carmona immediately after the coup leader had ordered the shutdown of the country's Congress and Supreme Court?
Given that Gunson has often claimed to be a defender of democracy, the positions he voiced that day appear rather strange.
Does anyone know anything about Colombian presidential candidate Antanas Mockus. Apparently, Mockus is favored to win and is leading Santos by nine point.
The previous Green Party presidential candidate was Ingrid Betancourt
Jesus, you can read our coverage of the Colombia elections at http://structurallymaladjusted.blogspot.com/. Also, Colombia Reports is an excellent resource.
The election has gotten much closer recently, but is almost certainly headed for a second round.
Mockus is really very centrist; supportive of an FTA, vowing to continue the "democratic security" policies, albeit with a softer hand.
That said, there would certainly be a big difference between Santos and Mockus.
Yea, that figures. I'll check out your blog references. I was surprised at how little coverage there was, but since there was none from the usual reliable sources I figured there wasn't much to get excited about, nevertheless, hope springs eternal
I think that, in Colombia, a centrist government would be a step forward.
Forrest Hylton has a piece in Counterpunch identifying James Carville as on the Mockus team. I used to wonder how he could be married to Matalin, it makes sense now. There's no difference between the two. A Mockus victory would be satisfying enough just to see an X in the Carville loss column.
Carville and Santos
Yeah, Carville is with Santos. Carville just goes where the money is at. He's become a total creep.
My sense is that Mockus would at least work to stop the most egriegous abuses by the Colombian military. Santos has been an enabler of these abuses.
It's sad. Because Delacour can't find anything positive in Venezuela's present he resorts to the past, victimizing who is today the most powerful and rich president of Latin America. Sad.
Delacour, talk about Venezuela's economic performance. How do you justify it?
Because Delacour can't find anything positive in Venezuela's present he resorts to the past
Actually, I could find both positive and not-so-positive things to talk about with regard to Venezuela's current state of affairs, but I don't have enough time for that at the moment. The reason I posted about Gunson's apologetics for a coup is that (1)it came up in my research and (2) the past happens to be important. As the old saying goes, those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
Hello Justin. Considering that we disagree on just about everything that has happened in Venezuela in the past ten years, I'm a little surprised that you want to pick a fight over something we actually agree on.
As you know, because you have read plenty of the articles I have written about the 2002 coup, I condemn the dictatorial behaviour that triggered the well-deserved overthrow of the brief regime of Pedro Carmona.
Why don't we have an argument about something more interesting, and relevant to today's Venezuela, such as the ongoing coup against the 1999 constitution by the present regime?
