HuffPost : Arizona Laws : Defeat of Republicans in November Elections : in California, and other swing Senate states like Colorado, Illinois, Florida, Nevada, Pennsylvania and even Arizona itself

Republicans are like Children playing with Fire, with the Fire of Racism, Prejudice, Hate and Fear, that strategy may backfire in the coming elections.

Three Lessons From Tuesday's Primaries

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-creamer/three-lessons-from-tuesda_b_605885.html

Some excerpts :

Lesson #3. It is increasingly clear the Arizona Immigration Law will damage Republican chances this fall.

The effects of Arizona's draconian "papers please" anti-immigration law are spreading like the oil from the BP's Deepwater Horizon.

Former HP Executive Carly Fiorina presents her self as stylish and 21st Century candidate, but she has taken a firm position supporting Arizona's SB 1070. Fiorina won the primary Tuesday to challenge Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. After some equivocation, former ebay CEO Meg Whitman also firmly backed the "principles" of SB 1070. She was nominated after spending $81 million to challenge former Governor Jerry Brown who wants to return to the Executive Mansion in Sacramento.

Their positions on the Arizona law may have helped them win the nomination, but they may be the kiss of death in the general election. Over five million of California's twenty four million citizens of voting age (21.5%) are Hispanic. They will likely be a decisive block of voters in the fall elections -- and they consider the Arizona law as a direct personal assault.

Not only will their position on the Arizona law become an albatross among persuadable Hispanic voters, it may likely spur large scale Latino turnout. Three million of the five million citizens of voting age are "surge" voters that usually vote only in general elections. But the Arizona law -- and large scale voter mobilization campaigns in the Latino community -- will likely change that.

Support for the Arizona law could spell trouble for other Republicans as well -- not only in California, but in many other swing Senate states like Colorado, Illinois, Florida, Nevada, Pennsylvania and even Arizona itself.

Just curious... what do you think about R. Correa's words during H. Clinton's visit to Ecuador? They sounded very contradictory with his previous words - and actions.

Thanks.

You'll have to be more specific about what you think the contradictions are. Once you tell me what you think the contradictions are, I'll be able to comment.

-José Antónimo- said...

Of course. My mistake.

President Rafael Correa said, with Ms. Clinton beside him, that he and the left that he represents are not anti-american, are not anti-capitalism and are not anti-imperialism.

We could debate whether such a thing is still called left, but that left aside, it is not something you would expect from a guy who declares himself an admirer of Ché Guevara, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chávez, and who keeps close ties with Evo Morales, Daniel Ortega and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In fact, is not something you would expect after hearing some of Correa's speeches, plainly. It is curious how the President changes his mind when he is next to the US' Secretary of State. I do find it very contradictory and would like to know your opinion.

Thanks.

President Rafael Correa said, with Ms. Clinton beside him, that he and the left that he represents are not anti-american, are not anti-capitalism and are not anti-imperialism.

Well, Chavez has also made the case that he's not "anti-American."

As I've tried to clarify in previous posts, there's a world of difference between opposing the prerogatives of the U.S. foreign policy establishment and being "anti-American." To me, the term "Anti-American" connotes a general antipathy to the totality of the United States and its people. For Correa to have challenged the prerogatives of the U.S. foreign policy establishment does not, in and of itself, qualify him as "Anti-American" because the U.S. foreign policy establishment does not represent the totality of the United States and its people.

So I don't really see any contradiction there.

Well, when Chávez says, and the video is linked in one of the comments of the post you mention, "Yankees de mierda" a few times, I wonder if that is aimed to "their foreign policy establishment" or if it could be taken as, according to your words, "a general antipathy to the totality of the United States and its people". It really points to the second one.

Let's face it, attacking the US is very popular in our countries and some politicians do it because it makes them popular as well. Many times I've heard the argument "well, yes, he does those things, but I support him because he opposes americans" to defend Fidel Castro or Hugo Chávez.

However, you might be right, probably Correa meant "I am against the US foreign policy establishment, but I do not feel a general antipathy to the totality of the US and its people" when he sat next to Ms. Clinton and said the words he said. In that case (if he opposes their policies) one might wonder why does he receive with high honours the person who is one of the responsibles of those very policies. It still seems contradictory to me.

But as for the other two points, which you completely "forgot" to mention... isn't there a contradiction for you in Rafael Correa saying that he is NOT against capitalism or against imperialism? I wonder how could there NOT be a contradiction there and would like to know your opinion, it's always good to know a different point of view.

I disagree. The "yanquis de mierda" quote was taken out of context. Chavez was clearly referring to U.S. elites who meddle in Venezuela's affairs for questionable reasons. Chavez was not referring to the totality of the United States and its people.

Let's face it, attacking the US...

None of these leaders are "attacking the US." They are challenging the prerogatives of the U.S. foreign policy establishment. The distinction happens to be important.

In that case (if he opposes their policies) one might wonder why does he receive with high honours the person who is one of the responsibles of those very policies.

There isn't a leader in Latin America who wouldn't receive Hillary Clinton with honors. Not Chavez. Not Castro. Not any leader. All are open to engagement with American policy-makers. The issue is that U.S. policy-makers are not open to engagement with all of the Latin American Left. U.S. policy-makers are open to engagement with some leaders of the Latin American Left because they want to divide the Latin American Left. That's what the Clinton-Correa meeting was all about. It's not going to work, though, because Correa is not that pliable.

If Correa said he's not against imperialism, he was probably misstating his own position. I have my doubts that he actually said that, though.

As for the purported statement about capitalism, Correa has always been clear that he sees an important role for markets and entrepreneurship in his vision of socialism, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he said he wasn't "against capitalism."
