One of the worst things about the denial of Morris's US visa is the attitude of Colombians. Just to give an example, compare the response to Ingrid Betancur's recent announcement of a demand to the state for the responsibility of her kidnapping, with the response of this situation of Hollman Morris. In the first case, public opinion response was exaggerated; all the newspapers wrote extensively about it, and readers were eager to condemn her attitude. In the latter, just a few articles have appeared in Colombian newspapers and close to zero opinion articles;no massive groups in facebook have been created, nor important discussions in forums.
The international media -including that in the US- was quickest in covering these events that the one in Colombia.
It's clear that Colombia's government campaign of discrediting journalists and opposition was successful and the country is numbed before these lamentable news. That says a lot about a society.

The Morris case is scandalous. The fact that the Pentagon would coordinate with Colombia's brow-beating president in discriminating against a critical Colombian journalist belies the notion that the U.S. foreign policy establishment is serious about democracy promotion.

Hey Justin, I'd like to talk to you about your impressions of UNM. I'm interested in applying for a graduate program there, but would like to hear what you think about it. Do you know anything about the other programs at UNM, such as sociology and Latin American studies? Do you think the departments are leftist, or more conservative? Would you recommend this as a good place for a leftist to pursue a degree?

Justin Delacour said...

With regard to the question of where you should do your graduate studies, it really depends on what your options are and what your specific interests are. Are there any specific countries, movements, or political parties that you're interested in studying?

You might want to look into New York's CUNY and SUNY systems because there are a lot of scholars in the CUNY and SUNY schools --and in New York more generally-- whom graduate students on the Left can work with.

Anonymous said...

But what can you tell me about UNM? I'm mostly interested in studying Latin American development and class relations through a Marxist perspective. Would I be making a mistake by going to UNM?

Sociology in general is more open to that sort of perspective than most of the other social sciences, so it wouldn't be impossible for you to pursue that kind of analysis at UNM. However, I'm not sure you'd have the kind of support from faculty that you'd like.

Are you limited to New Mexico, or are you considering other programs as well?

Well, I'm looking at other programs too, but I would be able to pay in-state tuition for the Latin American Studies at UNM due to an agreement they have with neighboring states. Also, I don't think I have a good enough undergrad GPA to get into some of the more competitive programs like NY. For those reasons UNM is attractive to me, but I'm just concerned that I might not find a good environment, or the right kind of faculty for what I want to study. My main research interest is to analyze economic elites in Latin America.

But you definitely have a more leftist approach. How has your experience been?

Justin Delacour said...

As any leftist political scientist will tell you, political science is not a particularly hospitable discipline for leftists. Within the discipline, leftists have a more difficult time than run-of-the-mill liberals because they have to maneuver around more ideological obstacles.

I think leftists have an easier time in sociology or cultural anthropology.

There are a lot of universities in the WICHE program, so I would suggest you look through various programs to see which ones have faculty with similar outlooks to your own. If you need help with researching the different departments, let me know.

Justin Delacour said...

One other thing. If you're interested in going into academia, it's better to go straight into a discipline (like sociology or anthropology) than to go into an inter-disciplinary program like Latin American Studies. I got the Master's in Latin American Studies, but I would have been better off if I'd gone straight into a discipline because it would have been a shorter route to the doctorate.

However, if you're interested in going into something other than academia, the Latin American Studies program is not a bad route.

Thanks for your response Justin. I have looked for other programs in the WICHE program, but have found very little for what I am interested in. The only sociology program I found is in Las Vegas, and doesn't seem to be oriented towards Latin America at all, nor anything I'm interested in.

I do want to end up in academia, but all of the good PhD programs that I have seen are pretty competitive. I thought I'd do a masters first to make myself more competitive for a good Phd program.

Is doing a masters in LAS not a good idea just because of the extra time it takes? Or are there other disadvantages to doing it that way?

In that case, Latin American Studies at UNM would probably be a good fit for you. It's a good way to see which of the different disciplines are of most interest to you. When you're working on the M.A., you don't really have to worry too much about whether some faculty don't see eye to eye with you. Nobody will hold it against you.

If you're interested in moving on to a Ph.D. program, I would suggest studying for the GRE. A couple of months of preparation for the GRE can vastly improve your score. In turn, having a good GRE score will give you a lot more options. I can't stress this enough.

Reguardless of whether you end up in academia, advanced education in the 'soft social sciences pays off.

For example, I am the most educated weed-puller in entire area where I make my living.

My background in critical theory, philosophy, political science, and English allows me to pull weeds with panazz!

Other weed-pullers view me with a degree of suspicion, believing that I have a haughty demeanor. And that's alright by me. I'm the best damned weed-puller in these parts. LOL

Justin, Eva Goligner gave a great interview with Dennis Berstein on Flashpoints on Thursday evening (KPFA).

It's available in their archieves. Check it out. I look forward to your take on the dispute between Colombia and Venezuela.

Thanks Justin. I'm studying for the GRE right now. But its my undergrad GPA (3.0) which makes me uncompetitive. I will be applying to several LAS programs this fall. UNM will be one of them, and for sure the cheapest option! Thanks for answering my questions.

Sure, but you can compensate for that by preparing for the GRE for a few months and getting a good score on it. It's not hard to do. Having a good GRE score can really pay off in the long run because (1) it will permit you more options in terms of which Ph.D. programs you can apply to and get funding from and (2) it will win you more respect from some faculty. It's completely ridiculous, of course, but these are the unfortunate rules we have to play by.
