Geez, Justin, it is a wee bit depressing that the NYT, a major source of the official narrative, is still in high disinformation/propaganda mode. Kind of like the official news sources for the Soviet Union back in the day.
But it 'works'--as evidenced by the managerial and intellectual classes, and the ease in which they imbibe and spew forth the official meme.
With so many critical issues to deal with, we still have a ruling class that is stuck in pathological imperialist ways of seeing the world.
Are we on the cusp of further political, economic, ideological/institutional decline? I am inclined to say yes to that question.
Certainly, it is apparant that the US is not in a propitious position to lead the way toward addressing the myriad problems facing humankind at this juncture: ecosystem collapse, wars, disease, social and economic pathologies, etc.
Public and corporate media in the US consistantly side with oligarchies and blunt force when dealing with authentic democratic and social movements. That they can advance the meme "advancing democracy and rule of law" given the decades of doing exactly the opposite--well, it doesn't bode well for the US as a nation or as a center of power in the world.
I watched the BBC interview of Chavez last night, and it is quite embarassing for the anglo world that the questions presented to President Chavez were so ill-thought out and even obtuse. But, i suspect, that the British public are subjected to the same patterns of disinformation that are so well entrenched among the US population. Despite the desparate and hostile questioning, Chavez aquitted himself quite well, as he pointed out the sheer silliness of the types of questions being asked.
This is disconcerting as well as a positive portent. One can be assured that the US imperialist mode of thought and action are on the decline. All the better for smaller nations that do aspire to address dire problems to align among themselves, outside of Daddy Yankee's cruel dominion.
But, i suspect, that the British public are subjected to the same patterns of disinformation that are so well entrenched among the US population.
I suspect that Europe in general is subjected to a fair amount of propaganda about Latin America. That's something I'd like to study, in fact. After finishing my research about U.S. media coverage of Latin America, I'm thinking of studying the press coverage of Latin America in Spanish and British newspapers.
